Paul Ryan Abandons Twitter Account for Shiny New VP Handle

Ryan.

The installation of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney's running mate meant the retirement (perhaps temporary) of Ryan's Twitter account, @RepPaulRyan, in favor of the one-day-old handle, @PaulRyanVP. Already Ryan's new account has 85,821 followers and it's quickly growing. His old platform has nearly 185,000 followers, with whom he shared thoughts and policy proposals on the tax code, the budget, and health-care: "With the right leadership, we will pass #FullRepeal & advance real health care solutions for the American people."

Interestingly, Ryan actually follows people on his VP account, 79 in total — 78 more than he does on the congressional handle. The only account he follows there is National Debt Tweets. Ryan's online makeover reflects a more social and less self-important self that subscribes to the 140-character musings of Scott Walker, Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, Andrea Saul, and several members of Mitt's digital team, probably the folks who set up the the new account. Here's a taste of Ryan Twitter 2.0, in which he basically says "What Mitt said":

Twitter User Who Threatened NYC Theater Massacre Now Chatting With NYPD

A day after Twitter turned over data regarding the user @obamasmistress in response to a subpoena, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the NYPD has identified the user and is looking into their threats about opening fire in a Broadway theater (and presumably, the user's references to killing a wide range of celebrities). “We are talking [to] and will [be] interviewing that person," said Kelly. "That person is not in New York City." If arrested, the user could face reckless endangerment or reckless statement charges. Police are also investigating whether someone else might have been using the account, raising the possibility that this is simply the most unfunny prank every played on someone who left themselves logged in on a public computer.

Journalist Has Twitter Suspended After Complaining About NBC’s Olympics Coverage

Attempting to silence one's critics online almost always results in a massive magnification of their complaints. Today's example comes via the British journalist Guy Adams, who spent hours on Friday bashing NBC's delayed stateside coverage of the Olympics as "disgusting money-grabbing" by "total buffoons." In one tweet from his rant, Adams wrote, "The man responsible for NBC pretending the Olympics haven't started yet is Gary Zenkel. Tell him what u think! Email: Gary.zenkel@nbcuni.com." Soon after, Adams found his account had been suspended — "for posting an individual's private information such as private email address," as Twitter later informed him. Whether the address in question was actually private is arguable, but the shaky application of the rule is only undermined by the fact that Twitter and NBC have a strategic partnership for the Games.

While Adams's account remains down, his cause has blown up.

In an e-mail to Twitter, obtained by Deadspin, Adams writes:

I'm of course happy to abide by Twitter's rules, now and forever. But I don't see how I broke them in this case: I didn't publish a private email address. Just a corporate one, which is widely available to anyone with access to Google, and is identical to one that all of the tens of thousands of NBC Universal employees share.

It's no more "private" than the address I'm emailing you from right now.

Either way, quite worrying that NBC, whose parent company are an Olympic sponsor, are apparently trying (and, in this case, succeeding) in shutting down the Twitter accounts of journliasts who are critical of their Olympic coverage.

Am I to presume, for example, that they decided to complain about me because of my recent article in the Indy's news page about their various failures?

His account of the saga can be seen here, and includes confirmation that NBC Sports filed a complaint to have his account removed for posting the "personal information of one of our executives." (Adams also appears to have retweeted a link to an illegal stream of the Opening Ceremony, but that message was not cited as a suspend-able offense by NBC or Twitter.)

According to Twitter's rules, private and confidential information includes "non-public, personal email addresses," while Zenkel's is clearly corporate, not personal. If it was ever private, it's not now.

Apple and Twitter Could Be the Next Huge Tech Alliance

After the royally botched Facebook IPO, which was followed by a precipitous drop in the social media giant's stock price (and expectations), it is entirely understandable that tech observers might be a little wary of prognosticating on what the next great digital thing will be. But that's no reason to discount early-stage talks between Apple and Twitter first reported by the New York Times in a cover story today. According to people in the know, Apple is considering investing hundreds of millions of dollars in Twitter — chump change for a company with well over $100 billion in the bank — as a way of breaking into the social media game.

The idea that Apple, creator of beautiful gadgetry and sleek hardware, would want to jump into the fast-changing world of social media might just raise alarm bells. Consider other recent tech crossovers: Bing, Microsoft's attempt at a search engine, which should be renamed the Belly Flop Heard Around the World, and Google Plus, the search giant's anemic Facebook competitor. Google's plans to build a smartphone (and rumors that Facebook is considering the same) have similarly been panned as bizarre and a distraction.

But as Apple CEO Timothy Cook reassuringly told the Times, "Apple doesn't have to own a social network. But does Apple need to be social? Yes." Which is why Apple's failed social media music service, Ping, was rolled out in partnership with Twitter and why Apple has already integrated Twitter (and Facebook) into its newest operating system, 10.8 Mountain Lion. It also wouldn't be crazy to imagine future Twitter-ready iterations of Apple's vaunted iOS operating system for the iPhone.

Meanwhile, Twitter — which considers itself the "lucky mistress" favored after Facebook jilted Apple — has appointed a vice-president, Kevin Thau, to work full time on the company's relationship with Apple. Thau will also likely get a leg up from CFO Ali Rowghani, who, before joining Twitter in 2010, had worked for nine years at Pixar under Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Ultimately, cynics may see in these talks a simple ploy by Apple to get in on the next overpriced tech IPO — Twitter is, after all, expected to go public sometime in the coming years, accompanied by a boatload of fanfare. But, on closer inspection, an Apple-Twitter alliance might just be the perfect match Silicon Valley has been waiting for.
